Silicone elastomers consist of a silicone polymer (polysiloxane) that is based on silicon, oxygen, carbon and hydrogen and has impressive properties that other elastomers cannot match. Silicones are characterized by their outstanding temperature resistance, electrical insulation properties, flexibility and chemical resistance. They are hypoallergenic and biocompatible, making them ideal for medical applications and skin contact. They also offer excellent UV and environmental resistance, making them extremely durable. Silicones can be produced as solid materials or as foams, with both variants having different strengths and their own areas of application.

Advantages of Silkon

Temperature resistance

Continuous temperatures from -60°C to 230°C are no problem for silicones, special variants can even withstand temperatures down to -115°C (PVMQ=phenyl silicones) or 315°C (high-temperature variants with corresponding additives).

Environment & media resistance

Extremely resistant to ozone, UV radiation and general weather influences. Resistant to various acids, bases and oils. Also resistant to fuels in the form of fluorosilicone.

Low compression set and high elasticity

Even under fluctuating temperature conditions and strong compression forces, silicone remains flexible and dimensionally stable. This makes it an outstanding sealing material.

Flame and fire resistance

Silicones are generally more flame-resistant than other plastics and burn to a white ash without dripping, while at the same time producing little smoke. Many silicones therefore easily achieve a fire protection classification according to UL94HB. Special mixtures also achieve UL94V0, UL94HF1 or FAR 25 and JAR 25.

Physiologically harmless

Silicones are generally considered to be non-toxic and neutral in taste and odor. In addition, silicones are usually food compliant (FDA, BFR XV, 1935/2004). Depending on the manufacturing standards, special materials can also meet medical standards such as ISO10993 or USP Class VI. Additives can even be used to produce metal-detectable materials and materials that inhibit bacterial and fungal growth.

Areas of application

Automotive

Due to their temperature and environmental resistance, silicones can be used in a wide range of applications in the automotive sector. Whether as seals in the interior, insulation (especially in electric cars), hose lines or in battery technology. They can be used for a wide range of applications, whether as vibration dampers or as part of thermal management, contributing to safety and durability.

Mechanical engineering

Silicones have outstanding mechanical properties and retain these over a wide temperature range and in contact with a wide variety of media. Whether as a seal, belt, hose or sheet material. A wide range of dimensions and quantities are available from stock and can be customized or self-adhesive.

Food industry

In the food industry, FDA, BFR or 1935/2004 compliant silicones are used as seals, hose lines (dairy hoses) or conveyor belts. Resistance to food oils and chemicals used in the food industry, as well as the possibility of making silicones metal detectable, are further advantages in addition to temperature resistance.

Medicine and pharmaceuticals

Masks, tubes, seals or as handle protection for surgical cutlery. Silicones can be sterilized in many ways and are resistant to X-rays and UV radiation. Thanks to our in-house LSR production, there are no limits to the processing of special compounds for the medical sector (e.g. Wacker Silpuran).

Aerospace and mass transit

The aviation and rail industries are subject to particularly stringent regulations in order to prevent potential harm to people. Seals or insulating materials must undergo strict tests in order to be used in these areas. This is ensured by conformity to international standards such as UL94V0, BMS 1-60 (Boeing), EN45545-2 or Airbus ABD0031.

Renewables, Energy Storage, Big Data and Semiconductor

Silicones are excellent insulators. Not only against electrical voltage but also in the area of thermal management. Wherever high temperatures and voltages are present, silicone can be the right solution. As seals in solar systems, compression pads in stack production, as clamping mats in energy storage systems/batteries or in server centers.

Foam or solid silicone?

Solid silicones are rubber-like products that are manufactured as sheet goods, extrusions (hose or profile geometry) or molded parts. The compounds used range from a Shore hardness of 10° Shore A to 90° Shore A. The density of the materials ranges from approx. 1.1g/cm³ to 1.3g/cm³ depending on the additives, filling materials and type added. Depending on the mixture, measurable values such as elasticity, compression set or tear propagation resistance can change accordingly or be specifically adjusted.

Additional chemical reactions in the material make it possible to foam silicone. This reduces the density of the material and creates air pockets in the material. The densities usually range from 0.2g/cm³ to 0.8g/cm³. Depending on the type of reaction, so-called “closed-cell” or “open-cell” structures are created. Apart from the fact that the materials are significantly lighter, they are also easier to press due to the gas inclusions. The chambers in the material created by the reaction ensure a significantly lower thermal conductivity, which makes silicone foams an excellent insulator. Silicone foams are also indispensable as vibration dampers or sealing materials in batteries, airplanes or passenger vehicles.

Due to their structure, closed-cell materials are not able to absorb water, which gives them better sealing properties, especially in static installation situations. Compression over 50% of the actual thickness can lead to the cell structure being destroyed
Open-cell materials are often more elastic, absorb sound even better and conduct heat more poorly. Water can penetrate, which means that significantly higher compression is required to seal a component than with closed-cell foams.
